Answer: As long as your skylight is installed by a licensed skylight installer you should have no problems. Question: How do I know that the company I’m choosing is qualified? Answer: Are they licensed ,Ask them how long they have been installing skylights and how long is the guarantee that they provide. Also ask if they have$1,000,000.00 liability insurance to better protect you and your house.( make sure they name you as additional insured.) You all so want to make sure that they have workmen compensation so if the worker gets hurt on the job you are protected against law suit by employees. (Make sure employs are covered by company, if he is paid and 1099 at end of year he is not an employee and will not be covered.) Ask for at least three reference. (If you do not pull permit the installer may not due your skylight to code and you may be force to remove or bring skylight up to code if caught and may have to pay double permit fees.) Question: How do I pick the best skylight? Answer: Read the following question in order to tell your skylight contractor what it is you are looking for skylight to do for you. 1. Do I want to see out of my skylight or due I just want light? 2. Do I need ventilation? 3. Do I need UV protection? Question: What is the best way to finish the interior of my skylight? Answer: 1/2" or 5/8" drywall is the best and safest finish because it is the way your house was most likely built and it afford you some protection from fires that may start in the attic verses some of the plastic reflective finish materials that will not slow the fires pursuit ask your city building department if the finish materials are approved to pass through the attic in to living space. (If your answer is no choose acrylic because the maximum dome size is 90" x 90".) 3. Due I want to see a bubble on my roof. (If your answer is no choose glass it is flat.) 4. I need to keep skylight price down. (If your answer is yes choose acrylic it cost lease.) 5. If cost is not an issue. (Then choose glass much longer life expectancy much higher performance more chooses in glass higher UV protection.) Question: When should I install a tube skylights? Answer: Tube lights are best in small rooms like Closets, Bath rooms, Entree ways and Hall ways and in tight locations where the roof is restrictive of a regular skylight.
